What is the cost to get started in kiteboarding in terms of equipment?

Between $1000 and $2000 as of 2007 (not including lessons).

Can't I just teach myself?

Some people are self taught, but parts of the sport are complex at first both equipment and steering the kite. The equipment is expensive enough that you don't want to thrash it. Also the kites can generate amazing power. Its not unlike getting onto a powerful motorcycle with no idea what you're doing.

What is the first step?

Get a good instructional DVD - Boost II is a well known one. The video from kitefilm.com looks good too. Other first step could be to get a trainer kite. Trainer kites are ~$120, they are small and safe to fly, but otherwise fly similar to the larger kites in many ways. Time spent on a trainer kite is golden!

Should I take a lesson first?

Lessons are essential but if you want to get the most for your money you should get a DVD and a trainer kite first and spend a few hours with both of those. Lessons are $100/hr to $150/hr in the U.S. It is money well spent, but you'll spend your first hour flying a trainer kite anyway most likely.

What equipment is needed?

Kite, harness and board.

Many also recommend getting a helmet. Again here it's like riding a motorcycle....unpredictable things can happen even when you're a pro. The speed and power are not dissimilar.

Does it take much physical strength?

No. This sport is all finesse (at least for beginner stuff). It takes less upper body strength than windsurfing or wakeboarding. The kite is amazing. You can hold it with one finger as it floats weightless or it can generate enough power to left you 20 feet, but it's all about the finesse.

For a beginner it's mostly a workout on your legs.

Where can I check the wind?

This is the best site for California at least - http://www.ikitesurf.com Checkout the great custom report

What should I bring when I go kiteboarding?

Here is my personal checklist:

Where to take lessons near L.A.?

I'm not really sure but doing a bit of searching will yield a few nearby results. Here are a few: http://www.actionwatersports.com http://www.malibukitesurfing.net/index.html http://caladventures.com/CaptainKirksWindsurfing.htm

What do I do with valuables while riding - such as keys, phone, wallet?

Leave anything of value in the car (assuming your car is in a reasonably safe place and is not likely to get broken into). Some harnesses then have a pocket with a string that ties onto your car key.
